|Title||Insen Live DVD|
|Music||Alva Noto + Ryuichi Sakamoto|
|Visuals||Karl Kliem / Dienststelle|
The DVD contains video recordings with Dolby 5.1 surround sound of two concerts of the Insen Tour at Porto and Barcelona. I heard of some people having playback stutter issues because the datarate seems to be a bit high, but on my MacBook Pro all of the tracks played nicely except “xerox”, which was stuttering every few seconds.
I’m not totally delighted with the recordings of the visuals on the DVD. The recordings were taken on the second tour, on which Forma, the production company, rented different LED screens than on the first tour. The new screens were much brighter and behaved differently with the gradients. The abstract piano keys in “Trioon” were meant to fade out smoothly over a longer period of time - in the same way they fade out of your ear and mind when you hear the sound. Now they faded out very fast. Unfortunately noone asked me to adapt the visuals to the new screens.
Something else i don’t like is the cyan background color that the light designer (hi Nigel!) chose for the track “Berlin”. It was intended to be a warm red color, which corresponds to the warm bass sound. (Nigel did a real good job for the rest of the show!).
In the conversation part of the DVD Ryuichi and Carsten are talking about different topics of the Insen Tour. The caption “Visualisation” starts at 5′40″. Its kind of funny seeing Carsten beating around the bush and finally admitting that there were other people helping with the visuals, mentioning “Karl Clean”.
All in all the DVD is a good documentation of the Insen Tour.
