Das Schloss - Sounds for Ceiling Animation

The mall “Das Schloss” had its opening on 15th of March in Berlin Steglitz. The huge ceiling of the Shopping Center features realtime animations of subjects like underwater, sky or cosmos. Dienststelle was asked to do sound design for these animations.

Shopfiction were employed a few weeks before the opening to save the ceiling animations, which were way behind schedule in every aspect. Hendrik Krz and me were asked to do atmosphere sounds as well as short loops for the ceatures, planes and other things that would fly along the ceiling. The animations are rendered in realtime on a stack of networked PCs with Virtools.

The manager of the mall was pretty impressed when a ceiling light broke through the sound of a virtual jet flying by during a presentation.

Unfortunately the brightness of the lights in the mall were miscalculated, so in the end you can’t see very much of the pretty animations - they are just too dark. Even with the biggest projectors that cost more than most of us earn in three years. And they have 24 of them. Here is a nice Quicktime VR of the mall.
